Closing the Competency Blind Spot

How one airline uses Amelia to turn training data into decision-grade evidence

The Challenge

Most airlines collect vast amounts of training data. Instructor grades, simulator session logs, check results, and ground-school scores accumulate across systems, spreadsheets, and paper records. Yet when a training manager needs to answer a simple question — “Is this pilot’s situational awareness improving or drifting?” — the answer is rarely available in a defensible, structured form. This is the competency blind spot. Training activity happens. Data is recorded. But the gap between raw data and decision-grade evidence means that competency drift, instructor inconsistency, and emerging risk signals go undetected until they surface through incidents or audit findings.

The Approach

Stage 1 — Baseline Training Report

Before a cadet enters training, Amelia produces a comprehensive baseline assessment including psychological analysis, cognitive profiling, and learning style assessment. Each cadet is assigned a silhouette profile with specific strengths, development areas, and potential manifestations mapped to Observable Behaviours.

Stage 2 — In-Training PEBT Report

During training, Amelia tracks competency progression across every session. Instructors assess cadets against the nine ICAO competencies using a structured grading scale. The platform generates rolling competency progression charts — a moving window showing how each competency develops across sessions.

Stage 3 — End of Training Report

At graduation, Amelia produces a comprehensive competency assessment covering all nine ICAO technical competencies plus non-technical skills. Each competency carries a structured assessment, positive Observable Behaviours, and development Observable Behaviours.

"Training data you already collect. Competency drift you can’t currently see. Amelia closes the gap."

The Role of Competency Intelligence

Beyond individual pilot evidence, Amelia provides the airline with fleet-level competency intelligence. Treemap analysis shows which competency areas are most commonly flagged for improvement across the entire cohort. The most common areas of improvement were Problem Solving and Decision Making (PDM), Situational Awareness (SAW), and Leadership and Teamwork (LTW). This fleet-level signal enabled the training department to adjust syllabus emphasis, brief instructors on high-frequency competency gaps, and design targeted interventions.

Personalised Development

When the platform identifies a competency gap for an individual pilot, Amelia generates a personalised training programme — approved by the training manager and delivered without disrupting the approved training syllabus. These programmes are mapped directly to ICAO competencies and Observable Behaviours, with clear learning objectives, delivery methods, and assessment criteria. Crucially, these interventions are implemented at the right time — when the competency signal first appears.

Value Delivered

A continuous evidence thread from baseline to graduation — structured, auditable, and aligned to ICAO and EASA competency frameworks.

Early detection of competency drift through Session Intelligence, enabling intervention weeks or months before a training failure or line incident.

Fleet-level competency intelligence that turns individual training events into strategic decisions about syllabus design, instructor allocation, and risk management.
